Attempted abduction thwarted east of Calgary
Module body

Sun Jul 5, 7:18 PM

CALGARY (CBC) - RCMP in Strathmore, Alta., are asking for the public's help in finding a man who tried to lure a nine-year-old girl away from her parents Sunday morning.

Police say the man approached the girl in the downtown core of Strathmore, about 50 kilometres east of Calgary, at about 10:30 a.m. He allegedly made inappropriate comments to the girl in an attempt to lure her away.

The girl's mother was in a store when she heard the man talking to her child. She came outside and confronted the man, who ran away.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, about 50 years old, tall with a thin build. He has shaggy, wavy grey hair and was wearing dirty, loose-fitting clothing. He was also carrying a white plastic bag.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Strathmore RCMP at 403-934-3968 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-222-TIPS

Thanks for the alert, Rev Willow.

It's great that the mother was aware and paying attention enough to know that there was someone attempting to lure her daughter away, and that she wasn't so far away from her that she couldn't have known what was going on. Chances are that she won't let the girl stay outside while she's inside again, though... at least until she's older.

Too many people think that a child of 9 (or even a little older) should be able to fend for themselves, or to know who is safe to go with and who isn't. But they don't think of how small a 9 year old child is compared to an adult, or even a teen. A 9 year old child can easily be overpowered. And let's not forget that Tori Stafford was led away from school by someone not related to her just weeks before her 9th birthday and never seen again. I'll be posting more about this in the Book Club soon, as the current book selection deals with this very topic.

No one who has made the decision to abuse another is going to be welcomed here for all the reasons stated by Louis, Rob, and Matthew. I can guarantee you that any site that starts allowing abusers to be in any sort of contact with victims of abus...

Thank you, Louis. As you say, AZU allows anyone to post their thoughts about any topic posted there (with the rare exception of being edited out at the discretion of those who run the site.) So anyone who wishes to ask a predator (past or present...

Absolutely. If they've become predators themselves, that was a choice they made. No outside source can force a person to become a predator/abuser. It is a choice. If they have "urges", it is their choice to control them or not to. Period. That the...

Hi Mathew, Such a project, completely separate from PACA, is entirely up to you (or anyone who wishes to undertake such a project. You are correct in that it has the potential to go very wrong. You would have no way of knowing who is truly "refo...

Hi Caoimhin, Rob and Louis are exactly right about this. It's difficult enough to keep track of the sneaky predators who try to come in here under false pretenses (saying they're against child abuse when they've posted contrary information at othe...

Louis, thanks for responding to this so quickly and correctly (and for the clarification about AZU... they are a great group of people, and Stitches has been a wonderful source of information.)

OK, time for me to weigh in here... I haven't had a chance to read the comments thoroughly (I did scan through) but will be doing so soon. But I will say this: Anyone who has made the choice to abuse, whether or not they themselves were victims o...
